Introduction

In the friendly city of Pretoria lies the upmarket ‘Old East’ suburb of Brooklyn with high-end residential properties and several upmarket mall developments. The well-established area is to the east of the city centre as it borders the University of Pretoria to its north and the suburbs of Waterkloof to the south. Brooklyn is also on the doorstep of many educational institutions and excellent primary and high schools.

Brooklyn Village had its genesis in the old Uilwag established in the 1990s to promote secure residential space, quality living, and to preserve the residential character of the suburb. Owners worked together to address the challenges facing residents and established a suitable response against crime in the suburbs for the benefit of all its occupants. Brooklyn Village came into being with a closure initiative in 2012, culminating in getting the High Court judgment in November 2016 authorising the Brooklyn Village closure. The closure became fully operational in 2017. The implementation of the closure was formally done according to the rules and regulations of the City of Tshwane. Although there was a high court judgment in favour of the Brooklyn Village, the execution of the closure was done according to the policies and procedures of the City of Tshwane.

As the Brooklyn Village enters its 7th year of operation with its vision of a “Secure Lifestyle for Our Community”, it continues to consolidate and build on this worthy ideal to enable our community to live in and experience a safer neighbourhood. Brooklyn Village is situated between Justice Mahomed Street, Jan Shoba Street, Waterkloof Road and Rupert Street, Brooklyn, Pretoria and is accessible from various major motorways and the Gautrain. The Brooklyn Village adjacent to the Brooklyn Mall is one of the smallest security villages with 157 family homes/units within the area.

Security is of the utmost importance to the inhabitants of Brooklyn Village. The main entrance situated close to the corner of Nicolson and Rupert streets is manned by guards on a 24-hour basis. Cameras are situated across the area at strategic points. Cameras are also being monitored off-site, to ensure that more than one person is on the lookout for any suspect behaviour in and around the area. Contributing members have the additional benefit of having access to the sliding gates situated in Alexander and Pienaar south streets. Pedestrians are not denied access to the area and can use pedestrian gates operated by cellphone technology are situated at all entrance gates.

With the majority of home owners also supporting the Security company for their own home security, this created an additional benefit by having a more designated armed patrol vehicle allocated to the village. The residents’ peace of mind is always a high priority and therefore, building on the dramatic improvements at closure, continuing refinements aim to further improve the security measures to ensure that all residents enjoy a safe environment.

Brooklyn Village has become one of the most sought-after areas since the closure and residents enjoy freedom of movement in the streets and Niemeyer Park. Please contact us, should you have any questions regarding property in our area, and definitely once you have decided to move into Brooklyn Village. We are looking forward to welcoming all new residents to our little paradise.
